‘Contact’ by Japanese art collective Mé

Displayed at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo as part of the sixth Roppongi Crossing series in 2019, ‘Contact’ by Japanese art collective Mé presents a captivating large-scale installation of turbulent ocean waters. The hyper-realistic artwork, confined within a small room, mesmerizes viewers with its depiction of stormy swells suspended in space. Illuminated by natural light streaming through a window behind it, the installation transforms subtly throughout the day, altering the appearance of the undulating ripples and creating a dynamic interplay of light and form. Mé's thematic exploration of manipulating perceptions of the physical world is palpable here, challenging viewers to contemplate the inherent unreliability and uncertainty of our environment. 'Contact' poignantly captures the delicate equilibrium between the forceful power and fragile nature of ocean currents, prompting reflection on the precarious future of Earth's marine ecosystems.
